Device-enabled PC for differently abled kids
A centre for special education, VidyaSagar, launched a low-cost device to make computers more accessible for children with limited motor abilities, on Wednesday.‘Vboss’ is a switch that will enable the left click of a mouse, and ‘Vinner’ is a USB interface for the switch.

The switch can also be used independently on battery toys. The toy will start with one click of the switch and it will stop with a second click, said Sujatha C, a special educator at VidyaSagar.
Stating that it is one of VidyaSagar’s missions to develop innovative aids to make life more interesting for people with disability, Kalpana Rao, vice principal of the school, said, “We have been working with IIT-Madras, Anna University and more recently with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.
We have come up with a number of devices which make communication, education and leisure more accessible.”
It has always been expensive to source the switch from abroad, she said adding,“To rectify this, 25-yearold NandhiniBotta, an electrical engineer working in the US, came up with a prototype of these two simple, affordable devices.Vinner connects to a computer and Vbossto Vinner. The device, patented by VidyaSagar, costs as low as Rs 750.”
Bottahas a sister with limited functional communication. She requestedpeople with disabilities, disabled people’s organisations, NGOs and government to use the device. She added thatit is only just and fair and it makes inclusion possible.
