Officials from Tamil Nadu Health System Project (TNHSP), under which GVK-EMRI 108 ambulance service is functioning, pointed out that the EMRI services has already established four care centres in Tambaram, Injambakkam and Padianallur. Further, the officials are keen to expand such trauma care and emergency care centres across the state.

To provide quick treatment to accident victims, the Health Department set up the first ECC in Tambaram the 2013. All these centres are located on roads that are accident prone, especially in highways, so that the accident victims can be treated without any delay. Following this, the officials decided to establish an ECC in Mamallapuram near ECR where eight to 10 accident cases are reported every day, sources said.

According to officials, the facility will function round the clock with a doctor and trained paramedic. It will have facilities like assessment of patients with accidental falls, resuscitation, immobilisation, bleeding control, pain management and intubation.

“These centers will act as intermediary between an ambulance and tertiary care centre, as doctors, after providing quick treatment, will refer the patients to nearby Government Hospitals,” an official said.

M Selvakumar, State Head Operation, GVK-EMRI, said that construction of ECC at Mamallapuram was nearing completion and the health officials will open the care centre in the beginning of April. “We are planning to construct another ECC in Sriperumbudur,” he said and added that each centre was receiving eight to ten patients every day. Further, since there are more number of fishermen residing on the ECR stretch, they can also avail emergency care medical facility, he noted.

When contacted by DT Next, P Uma Maheswari, Project Director, TNHSP, said, “The number of deaths caused in accidents will reduce, as the centres play a key role in resuscitating patients by providing emergency treatment and referring them to the GHs.”
