Airport–Metro station walkalator only from Tamil New Year’s day

In a big relief for air passengers, the walkalator between the Chennai International Airport’s domestic terminal and airport Metro station was inaugurated on Sunday by Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan. However, the walkalator is expected to be open for public only from April 14 as some final works were pending, airport officials said.

“The 602-metre-long walkalator is almost complete. We have to install CISF security booths and baggage screening facilities before opening it for the public. All air passengers will be screened before entering the walkalator,” an airport official said.

The project comes under the phase II modernisation of Chennai airport and connects both domestic and international terminals besides linking both terminals to the airport Metro station, a release from the Airports Authority of India said.

For the convenience of passengers, two self-check-in counters have been provided at the mezzanine level and the connecting tube is equipped with Flight Information Display System.

“So far, 12 walkalators of 30 metres each have been provided along a stretch of 602 metres. The cost of the phase is approximately Rs 40 crore,” the official said. The total length of project is 800 metres and work is on to complete the remaining portion.

The earliest proposal for a walkalator to connect the domestic and international terminals was mooted in 2008, when a contractor backed off. The project was revived again in 2013.

The first phase of the walkalator was expected to be completed in September 2017. But the work was delayed by several months.
