Sudden crater stalls traffic on OMR for two hours
While a number of road cave-in incidents were reported from different parts of the city, a four-foot hole suddenly appeared near the toll gate at Thoraipakkam on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) on Saturday morning
Chennai
This comes two months after a road cave-in was reported close to the metro rail site near DMS on Anna Salai in the city.Â
Police said, the 4x6 crater could have been caused due to the Metro Water pipe laying work that was in progress just 200 metres away from cave-in spot. This affected traffic on the busy OMR for over two hours causing severe hardship to commuters.Â
As soon as the road caved in, toll booth personnel rushed to the spot and alerted and diverted the motorists with the help of public. Thereafter, police arrived at the spot and placed sand bags around the crater to caution the road users.Â
Sources said that the road was repaired by the Metro Water workers with the help of JCB and normal traffic was restored on the stretch by afternoon.Â
It may be recalled that several road cave-ins, including three on Anna Salai, were reported after the metro rail work commenced.Â
