RSS man as Law varsity VC draws parties’ wrath
Opposition parties in the state have urged Governor Banwarilal Purohit to withdraw the appointment of Tamma Surya Narayana Sastri as Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University.

Condemning the appointment of a “pupil of Hindutva” as VC, Leader of Opposition MK Stalin said the appointment of a person living in the shadow of Sangh Parivar and a person subjected to disciplinary proceedings in the same University earlier would make people lose faith in the rule of law. Recalling the assurance of the Governor that “Raj Bhavan would not be used for politics,” Stalin said that he was pained by the appointment of a pracharak as VC of a university named after BR Ambedkar.
Clauses 12 (1) and 12 (2) of TN Dr Ambedkar Law University Act 1996 mandate that the Chancellor (Governor) can only finalise one of the three candidates shortlisted by the search committee and even if he was not convinced with the three, his only other option would be to constitute a fresh search committee and not to appoint a person other than three, Stalin claimed, adding that it was unhealthy to find the Chancellor violate the law.
Stalin also advised the Governor to avoid insulting Tamil Nadu by importing a person from other state when many eligible candidates are available. MDMK leader Vaiko recalled the disciplinary proceedings against Sastri during Karunanidhi’s regime and urged the Governor to annul the appointment.
