Nine kg tumour removed from man’s stomach

Addressing reporters on Friday, Dr R Jayanthi, dean of the hospital, said, “Mohan Raj, who resides at an orphanage in Anna Nagar, had approached a number of private hospitals in search of a solution to his bloated stomach and severe pain. Eventually, he came to RGGGH on February 14 and after a month of evaluating him, we performed the surgery on March 15.” The tumour weighed almost nine kilos. 

“While a kidney weighs between 150 and 200 grams, this heavy tumour rose from his kidney, occupying his whole stomach and obstructing all the major blood vessels,” Jayanthi said.   The surgery, performed by a team of one doctor, three assistants and two anaesthetists over a period of six and a half hours, was successful. 

“The patient has recovered completely and has no restrictions whatsoever. The surgery, which was done for free, would have cost him around Rs 4 lakh if done in a private hospital,” she added.
