Served non-veg, lawyer fires gun at hotel staff

A lawyer practising at the High Court was arrested after he opened fire at the manager of a hotel on Old Mahabalipuram Road, reportedly after a heated quarrel that followed when the hotel staff served him chicken fried rice instead of vegetable fried rice, on Wednesday night. The manager escaped unhurt as he ducked at the right time, police said.

Kelambakkam police arrested S Madhavan, a lawyer practising at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, and his assistant Muthalagu under various sections of the IPC on Thursday.

Madhavan, a resident of Anna Nagar, had checked in to the hotel, PP Residency, around 8 pm on Wednesday. He ordered vegetable fried rice and asked the hotel staff to serve him dinner at his room by 11 pm.

As per his request, the food was delivered at his room by 11 pm by Kannan, a catering student who works as a part time employee at the hotel. When he started having the food, Madhavan realised that he was eating chicken. A vegetarian, Madhavan was enraged that he was served non-vegetarian food.

He then shouted at Kannan and slapped him, and also called the manager, Sankaralingam, and demanded that Kannan be punished physically in front of him.

However, Sankaralingam refused to punish Kannan and instead apologised for the mix up. Angered further over this, Madhavan assaulted the manager before trying to vacate the hotel with his assistant.

Meanwhile, the news about a guest assaulting the staff spread among other employees, who gathered at the hotel’s parking area. Sensing trouble, Madhavan, who was under the influence of alcohol, pulled out a gun from his bag and opened fire, aiming at Sankaralingam.

“The bullet missed the manager only because he ducked. It shattered the windshield of a car that was parked nearby. The lawyer was immediately overpowered by employees and later handed over to the Kelambakkam police,” said sources.

Police said after the shooting, there were five bullets left in the revolver, apart from another 44 in magazine kept in his bag. Madhavan has licence for the gun, a .72 mm revolver, said police.
