9 booked for assaulting traffic cop
A day after a video of members of the public assaulting a traffic policeman, alleging he had demanded bribe, went viral on social media, police registered a case against seven men. Two of them were identified as Rakesh and Suresh.

Police action came after senior officers probed and confirmed that the policeman had not demanded bribe.Â
The video showed R Rakesh holding the policeman’s hand from behind and others shouting at him for demanding bribe. Police said Rakesh, who works for IIT-Madras was riding his two-wheeler with his father on Wednesday night when traffic investigation sub-inspector Karthikeya Pandiyan stopped them for not wearing helmet on Velachery 100-feet Road.Â
Pandiyan issued an e-challan of Rs 100 and Rakesh accused him of demanding bribe. Soon passersby joined Rakesh to assault and abuse the policeman.
