It was arriving at the second platform of the Urapakkam railway station around 11.35 am. As the train was pulling in slowing, the screw coupling which links the sixth and seventh coaches malfunctioned. The loco Pilot noticed that the coaches had been detached and stopped the train. Since there was no station master at the Urapakkam station, the loco pilot alerted officials at Tambaram and Chengalpet.Â
A team of officials and engineers rushed to the spot. All the passengers were evacuated and coaches were joined temporarily and the train was slowly moved to the loop track in Guduvanchery railway station by 1 pm.Â
After detailed examination of both the couplers, officials found one malfunctioned due to the failure of a mechanical device inside. The matter had been taken up with the supplier.Â
Service along the Beach–Chengalpet line was affected for nearly 3 hours. Two EMUs (40538, 40536) between Chengalpet and Tambaram were partially cancelled.
