‘Over 6,000 work as orderlies in Tamil Nadu’
An estimated 6,000 police personnel are being used as orderlies by hundreds of police officers, including IPS, State cadre and even retired officers, across the State. This translates to over 50,000 man-hours of manpower (and salary) wasted every day on pampering senior officers and their family members.

On Tuesday the State DGP had sought details regarding deployment of police personnel as orderlies following probing questions from the Madras High Court on Monday.
“We have asked for details from all unit heads. Whatever details we have received will be submitted to the court on Thursday,” said a senior officer from the state police headquarters.
But sources say it remains to be seen whether the department would officially accept the existence of orderly system, as these personnel are never posted as orderly but instead attached to a station, or wing or a unit.
“Those working in the station and units may not have even seen the particular officer, because he or she would be working in officers’ residence or farm house or even their spouses’ house,” said a police personnel, a veteran who has spent nearly 30 years in service.
According to him, there was a batch mate who worked as a cook at the residence of the district SP since he joined duty.
These officers are often asked to do various jobs including taking the dog for a walk, buying vegetables, dropping children at school and picking them up among other chores.
The Madras High Court on Monday had asked the government why the orderly system, which was abolished in the year 1979 through a GO, was still in practice in Tamil Nadu and had called for details.
