Corporation ties up with private bank for smart card project

Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan said, “ICICI Bank has been awarded the tender to execute this project.” 

DTNext had first reported about the civic body’s plan to introduce a smart card that can be used to make payments. This is an attempt by the Corporation to help the public go ‘cashless’. A senior Corporation official said that preparation of a detailed document with a roadmap for the project is underway. The project will be executed in a phased manner. 

“These cards can be purchased at the e-Seva centres, where we will be setting up the initial hardware. We will also provide Point of Sales (PoS) machines at government offices, where one can swipe this card. 

Currently, there is no such facility available. However, the machines at these locations will accept only the Corporation-issued smart card, to attract more people to use these cards,” said the official. There is also a plan to integrate the smart card with the Chennai Metro Rail card eventually.
