The owner had obtained planning permission from the city corporation to construct a single-storey residential structure on Linghi Chetty Street in Mannady, but illegally built the other floors.

“During inspection, we found out that the owner had converted the structure into commercial building by constructing two more floors. The building was used for commercial purposes,” said an official.

The officials found that the ground and first floors had seven rooms that were rented out for shops, while the owner was residing on the second floor. “We had served caution notices in July last year. However, there was no response from the owner,” said a CMDA official.

“We sealed the structure on Tuesday morning and instructed shop owners about the procedures. The owner of the building did not give any explanation,” the officials said.
