Man, ‘wife’ try to rob elderly couple at T Nagar, arrested
Two men, who posed as man and wife and tried to overpower an elderly couple staying in Pondy Bazaar, were caught by the public in T Nagar on Monday afternoon.
Chennai
P Prakash (27), a civil engineer from Villupuram came to Dr Radhakrishnan’s house along with MM Sujanth (19) of Palani, who was dressed in a chudidhar. Seeing a ‘couple’, Radhakrishnan opened the door, and the duo immediately entered the house on the ground floor of the building.
When he realised that the ‘woman’ was in fact a man, Radhakrishnan raised an alarm, but was hit by the intruders. His wife, Jayachitra came to his rescue, but the duo used a chemical-laced handkerchief to cover her nose in an attempt to make her unconscious.
However, by then the public who heard Radhakrishnan’s cries rushed to his rescue. Realising they were outnumbered, the two tried to escape but were overpowered and handed over to the local police. During interrogation, they claimed Sujanth was disguised as a woman as they believed it was easier for couples to get a house on rent.
Police suspect Sujanth had taken note of the aged couple staying alone while working in the neighbourhood earlier. They appeared to have been planning to rob the couple, police said, adding that they were inquiring if the duo had committed similar crimes anywhere else.
