The deceased S Habibullah was a manager of a two-wheeler spares firm, said police officers. He was a resident of Thambu Chetti Street in Mannadi and is said to be fitness conscious. He reportedly did not have any medical history of ailments.

Habibullah used to drop his two children – nine-year-old daughter Ahmadullah and six-year-old son Abdullah – for the early morning swimming classes and would walk around the pool until the session got over.

On Tuesday, he got into the pool and was standing at the shallow end, which is 2.5-feet deep, when he collapsed.

The lifeguards who were present at the spot rushed to his rescue, but he couldn’t revive him after he was taken out of the water. The pool’s depth varies from 2.5 ft to four ft.

However, Ahmed, a relative of Habibullah, blamed the absence of helpers at the spot for the tragic death. “Had somebody noticed him, he could have been saved,” he said. After the incident, the pool was closed for the day.

Habibullah’s body was later sent to Omanduruar Government Hospital and was handed over to his kin after the autopsy. Police suspect that Habibullah might have suffered a massive attack and said it can be confirmed only after the report from the doctors.

Viscera samples have also been given for examination. Currently, a case has been registered under section 174 CrPC in Anna Square police station and further investigation is on.

“The fact that he drowned in 2.5 feet water is tricky and we are probing whether he attempted to do any stunt or health complications,” said an investigation officer. The Marina swimming pool usually opens at 6 am and is open till 8 am for coaching children, after which only women are allowed till 9.30 am. Later, it is open for everyone.
