Love angle to bomb attack in Pammal
A 19-year-old college student’s boyfriend hurled petrol bombs at the house of her former lover in Pammal on Saturday night

The boyfriend, identified as Sarath Kumar, 25, escaped after flinging two Molotov cocktails at the house of U Gopi, 24, a car driver. Kumar is a chain snatching suspect. Police said the incident occurred at 11.30 pm when Kumar, who had come out of jail more than a month ago, reached Gopi’s house on Park Street in Pammal near Pallavaram.
Sarath wanted Gopi to stay away from Keerthana, a BA first year student, who hails from the same neighbourhood. Police said that the girl was friendly with Gopi for the last two years but started avoiding him after she and Kumar became friends. On Saturday, Gopi confronted Keerthana over the issue and Kumar hurled the bombs as a warning to Gopi, police said.
Petrol bomber still at large
The 25-year-old chain snatching suspect who hurled petrol bombs at the house of his girlfriend’s former lover, is yet to be traced.
Keerthana told Kumar about her confrontation with Gopi. “Kumar became furious and decided to threaten Gopi by flinging petrol bombs at his house,” a cop said. As soon as people in the neighbourhood gathered, Kumar escaped, and police reached the spot.
After hurling abuses at Gopi, Kumar, who is believed to have been in an inebriated state, threw two petrol bombs at the house. He had used two beer bottles filled with petrol to make the bombs. However, only one exploded.
On Sunday the police called Gopi and Keerthana for inquiry and that is when Keerthana said she was harassed by Gopi on Saturday. While Gopi confirmed that he had confronted Keerthana over dumping him, the young woman lodged a complaint saying that he had harassed her on the road. Based on the complaint, Shankar Nagar police arrested Gopi under Sections of prevention of woman harassment act.
