    ‘Anonymous’ letter helps cops crack 3-year-old murder case

    An ‘anonymous’ letter received by the police led to the cracking of a three year-old murder case of a 60-year-old woman in Porur. Police had arrested one Arokyaselvam, 40, a native of Thoothukudi, a driver in the city.

    The case relates to the murder that took place on May 28, 2015, in which Glory, who was living alone in a house in Porur. She was allegedly killed by three men who entered her house offering a demonstration of a water purifier. 

    “The sender of the letter mentioned the name of Arokyaselvam detailing the latter’s claim of murder during a drinking session at a Tasmac shop,” a police officer said. 

    After receiving the letter, deputy commissioner, Ambattur, Sarvesh Raj, assigned a special team headed by Ambattur estate inspector Valli to probe the case. The team tracked down the main suspect Arokyaselvam and arrested him on Sunday. 

    In May 2015, after killing Glory, the gang had escaped with the valuables in the house. They tied up Sarala, the 45-year-old niece of the victim. Sarala came to visit her aunt just before the attack and was the only eyewitness in the case. Glory lived on the ground floor of a three-storey building in Lakshmi Nagar extension, Porur. 

    The victim was alone inside, while Sarala was drying grain. She went inside and shouted for help on seeing her aunt in a tied-up state. The intruders strangulated Glory to death and snatched her four-sovereign gold chain. They gagged Sarala also. 

    Arokyaselvam who was in the suspicion list had been interrogated in 2015 and was let off. When confronted again now, he confessed to the crime. Police are on lookout for two of his associates.
