IPL scam: IPS officer’s suspension revoked
Senior officer G Sampath Kumar, who blew the lid on the alleged cover up of the investigation into match fixing and betting syndicate in Indian Premier League cricket circuit, is back in service after spending the past four years under suspension.
Chennai
The state police department revoked his suspension as on March 1.
It was Sampath Kumar, the then superintendent of Q Branch wing, who brought out the alleged cover up by CB-CID that had taken over the probe from his team.
However, he soon found himself implicated in the case after being accused of collecting money from the bookies while he was investigating the case. He was suspended in February 2014 and was charge-sheeted for colluding with bookies.
The officer strongly denied the allegation, and when he deposed before Justice Mudgal Committee that inquired the matter, Sampath Kumar sought SIT probe into the betting cases.
After a prolonged Inquiry, the Inquiring Authority cleared him of the allegation, and held that he was framed without any basis. Following this, his suspension order was revoked on March 1 by the Government.
The justice, who was dealing with the cricket betting/ match fixing case investigated by the CB-CID, found wilful negligence and cover up by the CB-CID. The Inquiring Authority, however, found fault with him for interacting with media without getting prior permission.
