Koyambedu market to see better water, road amenities shortly

The traders claimed to be facing many issues like drinking water, poor lighting during night time and lack of toilet facility in the premises of the complex. Even the complex does not have a separate hall for having food and recreation. Worse still, since there are no proper road and parking areas inside the premises, vehicles, approaching to the markets are parked haphazardly. 

“We are paying taxes and in such a condition, why should we spend money even for getting water cans. Further, officials keep visiting the market complex and we also submit petitions to them for providing basic amenities. However, they do nothing for us,” said K Thamilarasan, a trader at vegetable market. 

VR Soundararajan, president of Koyambedu Wholesale Traders Association and member of Market Management Committee, who sent petition regarding this to the CMDA and GCC, said, “even though traders have long been demanding to draw attention of the concerned officials for undertaking such basic works, we are denied facilities.” He added that the officials earlier sealed some shops, which failed to pay property tax, but the same officials turned a blind eye to their grievances. They had so far paid property tax of Rs 7.90 crore, he pointed out. 

When contacted, a senior engineer (in-charge for market), said that a total of Rs 33 crore under Infrastructure and Amenities Fund scheme has already been sanctioned for infrastructure development in the market. “We will soon take up necessary works after discussing with the member of Market Management Committee,” he assured.
