    Unidentified men escaped with 50 sovereigns of gold and diamond jewels after breaking into a contractor’s house near Minjur.

    Dayanand (56), a resident of Kadamanjur village who executes projects for Tamil Nadu Water supply and Drainage Board, had gone to Chittoor along with family to attend a relative’s wedding on Saturday. When he returned on Sunday morning, he saw the house broken open. The gold and diamond jewellery kept inside a bureau were reported missing. 

    Based on Dayanand’s complaint, Minjur police registered a case and inspected the house with the help of sniffer dogs and lifted fingerprints. Dayanand and family were also questioned. After the preliminary inquiry, police said that the burglars first tried to break open the main door without success, after which they managed to unlock the door through the opening on the side of the house. Police have launched a hunt for the burglars. 

    Thieves use ‘medical substance’ tactic 

    In yet another case of theft, burglars took away silver articles, weighing around 2 kilograms, after spraying sleeping gas on two occupants of a house near Ponneri. The incident took place on Saturday night at V R Kandigai village. Babu (35) and his mother Amaravathi (70) were sleeping on the veranda of their house, when unidentified persons sprayed a medical substance on them and broke open the house. Neighbours woke them up on Sunday morning and the theft incident was noticed then. Ponneri police have launched a hunt for the miscreants.
