Police are on the lookout for a conman who duped a vessel shop staff after posing as an employee of a canteen in Anna University. The conman collected Rs 25,000 from a staff member of a metal vessel shop with a promise to deliver old vessels from the canteen and then disappeared.

Police said that the conman accompanied Senthil Kumar, 40, employee of the shop at Anna University and even showed all the vessels, kept stacked after cleaning, near the canteen. Senthil evaluated the vessels and paid Rs 25,000 to the conman, who went into the canteen promising to get a receipt for the sales, but never returned. Later, Senthil realised that he was conned and approached the Kotturpuram police station with a complaint.

Police said Senthil Kumar, from Washermanpet, was employed at a utensils and vessel showroom in Park Town. The conman, who gave his name as Jayaprakash met Senthil in the shop and informed him that he was running the canteen in Anna University campus. After purchasing some new vessels for his ‘canteen’, he reportedly said that he wanted to dispose of old and used vessels. Senthil agreed to buy the same and accompanied Jayaprakash to the University.

Although the latter disappeared after collecting the money, Senthil did not suspect that anything was amiss for quite a while. It was only when he searched for Jayaprakash in the canteen that he came to know from other staff that no one by that name was employed there. Senthil Kumar later lodged a complaint with the police.
