A day after nine people were killed in a road accident while travelling on a load vehicle on Chennai – Bengaluru highway, Tamil Nadu transport department issued strict warning, including cancelling the driver’s licence and suspension of RC of the vehicle for taking people on such vehicles – which has been barred by the department and also the court.

“All regional transport offices across the state were told to strictly monitor the situation and take action with the help of police,” a senior transport department official said. The department decided to crack the whip after nine persons, including eight women, from a village in Vellore were killed while travelling in mini cargo vehicle along with 14 others on Sunday.
The victims were traveling to attend a funeral in Thamal village in Kancheepuram. As their vehicle took a right turn into a smaller road, a private bus coming from the other side collided with it.
“There are many breaks in the central medians of the highway. These are not planned openings to enable taking turns, but made by the local public for their convenience. We are asking the highway department to close such openings,” the official said, pointing out that Sunday’s accident happened when the mini truck carrying people took a turn using such an opening on the median.
