Mortuary at Government Royapettah Hospital refurbished

Although the mortuary has handled many high-profile cases, including the post mortem on the accused in the IT techie Swathi murder case, the morgue has remained in a dilapidated condition. 

“Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar visited the mortuary and felt the need for the ambiance to be changed. The gate was in a terrible shape and the compound wall was also not in the best of conditions,” said C Kannan, Medical Superintendent at the Hospital.

With the sanctioned amount of Rs 15 lakh, the hospital has rebuilt the wall and the gate, besides changing the flooring of the entire mortuary. “We have elevated the flooring and are also going to create a waiting hall for the family members. Till now, the grieving kin of the dead were forced to wait under the sun,” he said. 

Following the completion of the remodelling, work will be initiated to convert the old block to a forensic department. “The department will have a lecture hall, storage room for all the records, and a staff room. This is all being done as part of the development programme of the hospital, under which a paediatric block was also inaugurated a few months back,” said a doctor from the hospital.
