Speaking about the hospital for the elderly, Dr V S Natarajan, father of Geriatric Medicine, said, “Geriatric care is only now gaining focus and having such centres at the city hospitals will serve to benefit a large percentage of the elderly population.”

The new facilities, including a 200-beded hospital, were announced on the occasion of its 85th Founder’s Day. “The state of the art super-speciality hospital will be inaugurated in Thiruverkadu. While the whole facility will be 1000-bedded, initially it will have 200 beds,” said Dr S Mehta, CEO of the hospital.

Dr Mehta’s Hospital, which started as a two-bedded nursing home in Sowcarpet in 1933 at a time when there was hardly any private healthcare in the city, boasts of 200 beds and is recognised as a pioneer in maternity, neonatology, paediatrics, women’s health and surgical outcomes. It is also the only hospital to have joined AHPI and other organisations in a project to understand and plan out a set of models to be followed in hospital trauma care, based on the ISRO model.
