‘Street vendors cannot demand place as a right’
Holding that street vendors cannot demand the same place they were running the business as a matter of right, the Madras High Court has set aside a plea moved by TN Street Vendors Welfare Association to grant permission for installing the shops at the same place from where they were removed in Adyar.

A division bench comprising Justice M Venugopal and Justice S Viadyanathan said, “As the Corporation of Chennai had removed the encroachment and as they have decided not to grant any permission to run the food shops/bunk shops in the place where the members of the association occupied and that the Greater Chennai Corporation conducted survey of street vendors and bio-metric have also been completed in Zone 13, we are of the view that the relief cannot be granted.”
Recording the submission of the Corporation that based on various complaints from IT companies, fashion technology institute and members of ladies’ hostel located in Ramanujam IT Park Road that about 45 food outlets were functioning in unhygienic conditions and that the persons are creating problem to the women who have to come in and out of the hostel, the court held that on this score also, the relief sought by the association cannot be granted.
