Suburban trains with CCTV surveillance and GPS-based PAS in city soon
In a boost to women commuters’ security, ladies compartment in local trains plying on the Chennai suburban network might soon be under CCTV surveillance. This apart, there might be GPS enabled passenger announcement system at stations, displaying real-time running information of the trains, a Southern Railway press release stated.

General manager of Southern Railway (SR) RK Kulshrestha, along with senior officials, on Tuesday inspected the ICF manufactured three-phase EMUs capable of clocking 105kmph and regenerating 30% power at Tambaram EMU car shed. A trial run of the EMU was also conducted from Tambaram to Chengalpattu on Tuesday morning.Â
The train, which has LED indication for chain pulling and event recorder for recording the data of train operation and other train control systems besides higher hauling capacity, would be introduced for passenger service after the completion of the statutory trial runs, the release added.Â
The stainless steel fabricated coaches have also been provided with electronic sensors for computer monitored speed control and braking system and better ventilation system for passengers.
