Joint group to monitor city college students
Following the violent clash between students of Presidency College and Pachaiyappa’s College at Pattaraivakkam railway station and subsequent arrest of students with weapons, C Sylendra Babu, Additional Deputy General of Police (ADGP – Railways), held a meeting with the representatives of a few colleges to discuss the ways to prevent students from getting involved in anti-social activities.

Sources said that representatives from Pachayappa’s College, Patrician College, Ambedkar Law College, Presidency College, Hindu College and Chengalpattu Law College participated in discussion. They decided to form a tri-party group comprising college staff, police personnel and railway police to constantly monitor the students’ movement outside the campus as well.
Speaking to DT Next, Dr P Arulmozhichelvan, who represented Pachayappa’s College at the meeting, said that all the colleges invited the ADGP to visit the campuses and deliver speeches on how such behaviour of the students was creating a negative impression about them in the society. Sylendra Babu is also said to have agreed to it. Colleges also wanted better regulation of student groups at railway stations in the morning and evening hours. “Clashes take place when students move in groups. If police could regulate students while boarding trains, it will prevent confrontation between them. Also, their bags should be checked for weapons before being allowed to board public transport. Usually, the seniors intimidate the junior students and ask them to conceal weapons in their bags,” said the professor. The meeting also highlighted the need to give counselling to students who often fight over the ‘route thala’ (king of the route) tag. “The students and their parents will be called for counselling to explain how it affects their career growth,” he added.
