Soon, a tree doctor for healthy green cover

A million trees in five years that is the Greater Chennai Corporation’s target to increase the city’s green cover. This year, 30,000 saplings will be planted and ‘tree doctors’ will ensure that they remain in the pink of health.

“Every year, 2 lakh trees will be planted to ensure that the city’s green cover gradually increases,” said a senior official, adding that they are hoping to get a nod for planting 30,000 trees in the initial phase, after a final report, prepared by the Care Earth Trust, is submitted to Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) for funding.

The project mapped the existing green cover in each zone and assessed open areas available, not only arterial and interior roads, but also traffic islands, medians, river banks and even dump yards. “Even MRTS and metro stations will be considered for which a special design has been prepared,” said Balaji S, former principal conservator of forests, who is a part of the project. Though only a handful of common species are considered during tree plantation now, the team has chosen more than 90 hardy varieties that would suit the coastal climate here. “Increasing the diversity means the bird population will also be augmented,” he added.

The trees will be monitored and a ‘tree doctor’ will be available for addressing any concerns regarding this. This concept is popular abroad, as trees must be maintained so that they do not pose danger or inconvenience to the public.

The officials are also planning a website that would provide comprehensive information on tree health and also services like pruning. “The public can share, their concern which will be immediately attended too,” said Balaji.

Stressing the key role that resident welfare associations play in this effort, he said a stakeholder meeting with RWAs from 15 zones has evinced positive response. “In five years time, with the support of residents, Chennai will be greener,” said Balaji.
