On Saturday morning at Mayajaal Multiplex Complex on ECR Road, on-lookers again wore the same as they saw an array of vintage and classic vehicles at display during the commencement of the Chennai Puducherry heritage drive.
Organised by the Madras Heritage Motoring Club, the annual event is put together by classic motor enthusiasts passionate about the history behind vintage cars and bikes. In rallies like these, organisers said the focus is about honouring the oldest cars. They get the star billing and attract the largest crowds, as audiences reminisce with a sense of nostalgia at the mighty machines which still stand their ground proudly. One of the top attractions is the 1959 Mark-I Ambassador owned by businessman Naresh Bangara that occupies pride of place at the display.
“My family bought this car 59 years ago and it’s still in working condition today. The spare parts are hard to source, but there are some good mechanic shops in Chennai as well as some fantastic restorers like MS Guhan, who is renowned for his work,” said Bangara. The single-owner car cost Rs 14,440 when he bought in nearly six decades ago – what would it be worth today?
“That depends on the collector’s decision. I still drive my car atleast twice a week for a few minutes to keep it in working condition, and I thoroughly enjoy it. We are a community of racing and motorsport enthusiasts, who try our best to help each other keep this art alive. However, there needs to be a real passion to love cars, and the time to work and restore them,” he added.
