In a statement on Friday, Stalin said, “Over 2,000 workers will lose their job due to such a detrimental decision. The DMK is strongly condemning this move. Moreover, the Avadi manufacturing unit has been a pioneer in Army uniforms production in accordance with the weather situation in the country.”

It is shocking that the Centre has taken such a decision when Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is from Tamil Nadu, he pointed out.

Stating that the Centre has not considered even the opinions of trade unions, protests and workers’ petitions before taking this decision, the LoP said, “Livelihood of workers including 800 women will largely be affected. While the BJP is very keen to close the manufacturing unit, the state government remains tight-lipped without protesting this move.”

Stalin also charged that the Centre has miserably failed to create employment in its four-year tenure and it is a clear indication of its complacency.

“The Centre must show interest in creating employment opportunities instead of depriving the industries of the existing employees,” the DMK leader said and demanded the Centre to abandon the decision to close the facility in Avadi. He also urged the Defence Minister to consider running the manufacturing unit.

“To allay the fears of workers, Sitharaman must take necessary measures and the Centre should cancel the decision to close the Avadi unit,” he noted.
