Dancing to Bharati’s poems on woman power
The husband-wife dancer duo from Chennai, Viraja and Shyamjith Kiran, are using the occasion of Republic Day this year to celebrate women’s empowerment. Their next production Eeram to be staged on January 25 at Spaces, is on the women-centric poems penned by freedom fighter and revolutionary Tamil poet Subramania Bharati.

Eeram (meaning moisture) is likened to a woman drenched in compassion. Viraja and Shyamjith say that they would like to bring this production to the audiences.
“Based on the poems of Bharati celebrating freedom and gender equality, our production, in Tamil, will unfold in four separate acts, each giving a glimpse into the essential aspects of womanhood in the world today. These include women’s education, male dominance and abuse.
Through Eeram, we attempt to trace if an appropriate definition of a modern woman exists and envision the impact of solidarity among women on society,” they add.
The script has been written by Prof Raghuraman and Sharada Vijay, while the music for the production is based on varied genres of music broadly spanning from folk, contemporary to classical and more. Kalyani Nair and Subiksha Rangarajan are the composers.
“Eeram uses humour, as well as self-introspection to get the message across. Using Bharati’s poems was the perfect choice; for instance, Pudhumai Penn is one of the most empowering poems ever written for the female gender,” says Shyamjith.
