‘Lifestyle, cause of infertility among women’

While some city doctors attribute the same to increased awareness, others say that cases of infertility have been on the rise owing to lifestyle.

“Many women today get married in their thirties. The proportion of women who intentionally delay pregnancy has increased greatly in the past few decades owing to various factors and this tends to have a negative effect on child bearing,” said Dr Meenakshi K, an Obstetrician.

Lifestyle habits have been found to be another important factor responsible for infertility. “Poor eating habits, the lack of any form of exercise and increased levels of stress are all contributing towards the rise of infertility among women. While it was not so common a couple of years ago, the rise in the number of cases has resulted in increased awareness, which leads to open discussions on the same with doctors,” said Dr Sampath Kumari of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI).

Stating that many women in the state are unaware of the contraception options that are available to them, she said that education should be started at the school level itself.

As per the annual report released by Lybrate, India’s first and largest online doctor consultation platform, recently, 27 per cent of the patients reached out to them for issues on infertility and contraception and the number of interactions on infertility and contraception saw a 290 per cent jump in the country as compared to last year.
