    Jail official held for IAS aspirant’s suicide bid

    Following an attempt to commit suicide by a 28-year-old woman IAS aspirant by slashing her throat, her boyfriend, a probationary officer in Vellore prison, has been arrested by the Chennai police. The arrested was identified as R Sathiyamoothy (28), a native of Vayalur, Tiruchy.

    Kumaran Nagar police said that the victim, a Dalit girl and a resident of Saidapet, had been in friendship with Group II officer Sathiyamoothy and he had promised to marry her. Recently Sathiyamoothy started avoiding her as he was planning to marry another woman. When came to know about this, the woman attempted to kill herself by slashing her neck with a blade. She was then admitted to a hospital in Mylapore.

    Police said that the woman had been attending classes at an IAS training academy.

    Police sources said Sathiyamoothy had offered the woman Rs 4 lakh so that she would not rakeup the issue. The probationary officer has been arrested on the basis of the woman’s statement recorded in the hospital. He had been remanded in judicial custody.

    Man held for demanding hush money
    Chromepet police on Sunday arrested a history sheeter for allegedly demanding mamul from roadside hawkers. The accused L Chellakannu (41) has many cases pending against him at Chromepet police station and was remanded in judicial custody.
    Vegetable vendor Balasundaram (57) had filed a complaint that Chellakannu demanded money from him and others in an inebriated state at Lakshmipuram junction on Saturday evening. Since he refused, Chellakannu allegedly attacked Balasundaram with a wooden log and injured him.
