Fare doubles on some routes, public shocked

This led to heated arguments at a number of places as the crew insisted on the new fare while the commuters refused to pay it. The situation was especially worse on night services operated by the MTC in the city.

“As I was waiting for a bus to Broadway from Thirunindravur, I heard a few others were discussing about the new bus fare. When I enquired with the time-keeper he informed me of the hike in fare. It was shocking the fare which used to be Rs 19 for a trip from Broadway to Thirunidravur worked to Rs 39 as per the revised rates,” said K Murugaiya, a painter.

“I tried to explain the new fare to each passenger on board the bus. Many began an argument with me,” said an MTC conductor of 37G bus .
