Private school teachers need orientation, feel education experts
Two recent incidents, including the death of a Class 10 student from Don Bosco School in Perambur during a ‘duck walk’ punishment and another video of a teacher seen continuously slapping a kid in front of the class in Virudhunagar have raised concerns about corporal punishments yet again.

Educationists say that there are other ways to handle students than resorting to such extreme means. Maalathi KR, an educationist and the former principal of an international school says, “Instead of giving a harsh punishment, teachers must give strict warnings. Most of the time, as a punishment, teachers deprive students of the activities they like, just to make them understand their mistake. And if things get extreme, they reach out to the parents.”
PK Ilamaran, state president of Tamil Nadu Teachers Association, pointed out that government school teachers are given proper orientation.
“However, many private schools teachers may not be qualified enough to handle the children,” he said. Strict policy against corporal punishment are in place, said an education department official.''
