Quadcopter to monitor Marina
With Kaanum Pongal falling on Tuesday, Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram police, along with the Coastal Security Group, are gearing up to tackle the crowd on the Marina, Besant Nagar beach and others coastal stretches on Tuesday.

The cops have built temporary fences on the sides of the beach and have cautioned Kaanum Pongal visitors from going swimming or taking boat rides. “We have deployed as many as 5,000 police personnel on Marina and Eliot’s beach, besides setting up special control rooms. At Marina there will be three drones, including one quadcopter with a public address system.
Two control rooms are being set up there as well,” said MC Sarangan, Additional Commissioner of Police, south. The police have also asked people to avail of public transport to avoid traffic congestion and parking problems. All children, coming with parents, will be given a tag/ hand band with details like parents’ phone number and contact details of nearby police stations to trace them back in case they are separated from their families.
There will be an additional 25 surveillance cameras, 12 all-terrain vehicles, mounted police besides crime detectives in civvies, the officer said, adding that police want the visitors to have a crime-free, hassle-free experience while visiting the second largest beach in the world. Kancheepuram police have asked visitors to abstain from swimming and boat rides at Mahabalipuram beach.
For the purpose, 60 swimmers have been roped in from fishing hamlets, in case of an emergency-like situation. The Thiruvallur police too have cautioned people visiting Pulicat (Pazhaverkadu) lake against swimming or boat rides on Kaanum Pongal day.
