The city crime branch on Thursday registered an FIR against the Mayor of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and five others for allegedly cheating the complainant of Rs 40 crore.

Sources in the police said that they had received a complaint stating that the mayor, Shaik Abdul Haziz from Telugu Desam Party and the other accused had collected the money from him by promising to set up a shrimp farm in 2017 which did not work out.
“We are on the lookout for the politician,” said a Chennai Crime Branch officer.
When contacted, Haziz said that he had nothing to do with the company against which the complaint has been lodged.
“I was the managing director of that company from 2008 to 2015-16. I resigned from the post and entered politics after that,” he said.
“Whatever the complainant is accusing me of, occurred in 2017-18. How can they drag me into this when I was not even a part of the company?” Haziz added. He also said that the complainant had earlier approached the court and lost the case. “Now they are trying to harass me by lodging a complaint with the Chennai police,” the Nellore Mayor said.
The city police, however, noted that even though he might have resigned from the post of managing director, he is still a promoter of the agro marine firm. According to sources, the police will arrest Haziz, if required.
