Dual runway operational at Chennai airport
Flights were simultaneously operated on the main and secondary runways, at Chennai international airport for nearly an hour on Thursday on a trial basis.
Chennai
As many as 22 flights landed and took off from both runways between 10.28 am and 11.23 am, said a press release from the Airport Authority of India (AAI). While five and eight flights took off respectively from main and secondary runway during a specified period, nine flights landed on the main runway. No landing of flights on secondary runway was attempted.
Flight delays were minimised to a great extent when the secondary runway was opened for operation and and usual congestion in the airspace were also reduced, said AAI. Since the runways were allocated based on the type of aircraft and its route, the track miles of flights came down, noted AAI.
The trial operation will continue for the next three months after which permanent implementation of the system will be considered, as per the release.
