Due to the arrival of many international flights around the same time and the impending Pongal festival, there was a long queue for immigration clearance at the international terminal.

Ashok Kumar from Thittakudi, Cuddalore district, who reached the airport by Emirates Airlines along with 363 passengers, grew impatient after seeing the crowd and approached immigration officials to get his passport cleared for exit. He also allegedly told them that he would face a lot of difficulty while travelling to his hometown due to the ongoing bus strike.

Since officials refused to entertain his request, he started verbally abusing them. Sources said he was under the influence of alcohol.

Suddenly, Kumar punched officials Kaur Singh and Aramudhan multiple times. The officials started bleeding and meanwhile, other passengers in the queue fled the scene. Due to the commotion, immigration check had to be temporarily stopped and CISF personnel rushed in and secured Kumar after much struggle. The two injured officials were sent to Chromepet government hospital.

Their medical certificates were forwarded to senior officials at the headquarters in Shastri Bhavan. Airport police on Wednesday arrested Kumar and remanded him in judicial custody.
