The incident took place at the Selva Vinayagar Temple located at West Karigalan Street in Adambakkam, which is one of the busiest temples in the locality. The priest who came in the morning was shocked to see the gate broken open.
He later found the cash looted from the hundi inside the temple. Soon, he alerted the Adambakkam police, who rushed to the spot and collected the CCTV footage from the nearby building. While combing the footage, police found two young men escaping with the looted money.Â
Police said that the CCTV footage also showed the same duo stealing a bicycle from the temple premises a week ago.
Police said that temple officials used to take the cash in the hundi once a month. The last clearance took place on December 20.
The temple officials claimed that they will get donations of around Rs 50,000 from the hundi in a month. They also told the police that lot of offerings were in the hundi due to Vaikunta Ekadasi and New Year day. Police said that a hunt is on to nab the duo.
