Stating that an eight-floored ‘Tower-3’ at the hospital will be built in 2018, Dr Narayana Babu, Dean at the hospital, said, “All the Out-Patient departments and laboratory services departments will be in this tower.

Also, the Rheumatology block, which is being built, will be completed within the next year.” He also said that a Transplant Unit will be in operation soon. While the state leads the country in cadaver organ transplants, the availability of such centres will help in increasing the number of transplants that take place in Government Hospitals.

“The unit will have a Urology and a Nephrology block with a focus on  transplants. The National Institute of Geriatrics will also be completed. As geriatric care in the state has become a serious affair, various hospitals around the city have taken the initiative to start centres with  improved facilities so as to provide better treatment opportunities to the aged,” added the Dean. A state of the arts viral lab, with focus laid on research and diagnosis, will also be introduced within the year. “It has been sanctioned and will be made operational soon.

It is a Central Government project under the National Health Mission. While there are centres in cities like Pune, introducing such a centre in Chennai, will not only benefit the students here, but also help research in the state to grow to new heights,” stated a Health official. Lastly, a Trauma Care Centre will also be fully operational in the hospital soon.

“This will be in line with the MoU that the Health Department had recently signed with an Australian University and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, for the Trauma Accidents Emergency Initiative (TAEI) programme. This will serve to bring down the deaths due to Road Traffic Accidents in the state by 2018,” the official added.
