Speaking to DT Next, Additional Commissioner for Traffic A Arun said the new rule would be strictly followed and it was announced in the run-up to New Year celebrations, to stop youngsters from going reckless on two-wheelers as part of the celebrations.
Police will not issue no objection certificates to the persons, who were caught for drunken driving or over-speeding, when they apply for a passport. Police sources said that daredevil acts are more commonly performed by youngsters under 19 years and this new regulation will make them think twice before indulging in such acts.
“The concept for this New Year is zero deaths and zero accidents. Youngsters, without realising the dangers involved and without thinking about their family, involve in such acts. Our idea is not to harass them, but to make them more careful about what they do,” said the additional commissioner.
The officer also said that vehicles will be checked for drunken driving at 176 points across the city with the help of over 3,000 police personnel, while over 120 ambulances will be kept ready to attend to any untoward incidents.
Another official said that the entire Marina stretch will be brought under police control on New Year’s Eve, though there won’t be additional restrictions on revellers.
Vehicles will not be allowed to enter Kamarajar Salai from Sunday night from 9 pm to 3 am. As per the custom, City Police Commissioner is expected to cut a cake near the Triumph of Labour statue to usher in 2018.
