Merc fatally knocks down two, injures three near Anna University

The deceased, R Venkatesan (27), a resident of Kodamabakkam and Praveenkumar (23), both photographers, were travelling on a bike when the car hit them. Both were photographers by profession. They were admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital with severe head injuries and both died on Monday.

Meanwhile, two others – P Kaliappan (20), a third-year engineering student of Anna University and a professor Narasimhan (46) of Mandaveli, who were travelling on another bike were also injured in the accident.

Police said that the Benz was driven by S Mohindran (28), owner of an IT firm at Akkarai on ECR. The incident took place when he was returning home at Mogappair after work. Kaliappan and Narasimhan, who were riding a scooter took a sudden turn to enter Anna University from Gandhi Mandapam Salai. Mohindran, who was behind them, was unable to control his car and the vehicle rammed the two-wheeler. While the two fell on the road, the car without stopping hit a car parked on the side and then a two-wheeler, before coming to a halt.

Venkatesan and Praveekumar, who were on the bike fell and suffered severe head injuries. On receipt information, Adyar traffic police rushed to the spot and sent the injured to the Royapettah Government Hospital from where they were transferred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. However, both succumbed to injuries.

Police have arrested Mohindran for rash driving and endangering life. Since he was not under the influence of alcohol, investigation is on to ascertain what led to the multiple collisions.
