When value of Rs 20 shot up to Rs 10,000
In what could be yet another technique deployed to influence voters in RK Nagar by politicians, supporters of AIADMK’s side-lined leader and former MP TTV Dinakaran were allegedly distributing Rs 20 currency notes since Wednesday night to voters, with specified serial numbers. These ‘marked’ notes can be ‘converted into Rs 10,000’ later, police said here on Thursday.

Sources said the cadre may have resorted to this method as carrying large quantity of money to bribe voters became difficult due to a strict vigil by police and paramilitary forces in the constituency on the eve of election day. “These notes were used like ‘convertible bonds’. Some of the supporters of TTV Dinakaran were found distributing the cash to voters in the constituency,” police said, adding that they had registered six cases in connection with the seizure. “Six people, including two women, were booked by the police and later let off on own bail,” police added.
Police seized a total of 57 such marked notes from the six people who were not voters. “They were the people who were trying to distribute the notes to voters, to influence voting. No voter who was in possession of such a note has been traced,” police said. When TTV Dinakaran was asked by reporters on the latest bribery allegation, he retorted, asking, “Do you mean to say I am that close to people from whom I can borrow vote in such a way?”
