Kancheepuram police on Thursday booked the school teacher involved in the caning of seven students under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act (JJA). Following a complaint from the parents of children studying in the Government Primary School in Chengalpattu after they were beaten severely, police swung into action.

Godavari, Class in charge of Class 2, at the Government Primary School in Veeraapuram, Chengalpattu, badly beat up seven kids,  including three girls, with a cane, for being disobedient in class. The students, who suffered injuries to their hands, back and other body parts, complained about the incident to their parents when they returned home, following which all the seven children were rushed to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital. On Wednesday, the Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Kancheepuram, Thiruvalaselvi, questioned Godavari about the incident, and upon learning that Godavari had beaten the students for a silly reason, the CEO immediately suspended her from the work, saying, “Hereafter it is not safe for other students if you continue to be at work.”  The Chengalpattu taluk police filed a criminal case against Godavari and arrested the teacher under Section 75 of the JJ ACT 2015 and produced her in court. Later, she was released on bail.
