“How often have you planned a nice getaway out of town only to be hassled with long airport queues, irritation over finding a budget-friendly hotel, places to sight-see and eat? That’s why we prefer to book a room at a nice B&B in Chennai itself and enjoy a lazy time,” says Radhika Kumar, an IT employee, who lives in T Nagar.

Resorts in hot vacation spots like Goa usually increase their prices on a long weekend or during the holiday season – while hotels in the city bring their rates down. Shravan Kumar, a travel planner, says, “Millennials today really don’t want to get caught in the mad rush of holiday-goers – it’s all about keeping it peaceful and indulging in activities like a spa session, a lavish meal, a few drinks by the pool in the evening. In today’s fast-paced corporate world, staycations are ideal to de-stress and even explore the sights and sounds of the hometown – which many never get to explore.”

While some opt for fivestar hotels, others prefer a retreat just on the outskirts of town, to get in touch with their nature-loving selves – but at the same not giving up on the comfort.

Ratish Ramachandran, who runs Oxyville, a farm-resort in Perumbakkam says, “Our staycations are all about bringing a nostalgic touch to things, escaping noise and light pollution, and being chased by cows, goats and roosters that are running around. There’s even a 50foot well if you fancy scuba diving. After days of sitting cooped in a cabin at work, this is what many prefer – and we keep it camera-free as well. I’ve found that while planning for a couple’s getaway or a birthday party, youngsters want to get home the next morning or that very night itself – so such a spot is ideal.”
