IIT-M now free of plastic waste, garbage: TNPCB
After the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had ordered the IIT Madras to clean up the plastic waste and other garbage dumped around the campus, a report was submitted on Wednesday by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) stating that the institution had followed the order.
Chennai
The report filed by TNPCB stated, “During inspection it was noticed that no plastic wastes were dumped near the Krishna Gate, Velachery Gate and STP area.
The IIT Madras is maintaining records on the collection and disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable municipal solid waste generated in the premises… the IIT Madras has applied for authorisation under the bio medical waste management rules 2016. The IIT Madras has applied for Consent of the Board for the additional building constructed/ under construction after the year 2006…”
Animal activist Antony Rubin, petitioner, said that it is interesting that the institution is applying for the Consent now. “After 2006, close to 10 buildings have come up without clearance,” he added. The activist moved the NGT against Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IIT-M), after an RTI reply revealed that 220 deer and eight blackbucks have died between 2014-2016.
He added, “The earlier order mentioned that Polluter Pays principle will be slapped if more blackbuck deaths occur due to violations of the protected species.
Now, we have asked this protection to be extended to all the other wildlife present inside IIT Madras. This has been accepted.”
