A woman who allegedly staged a robbery drama to gain possession of 13 sovereigns of jewels belonging to her mother-in-law, was nabbed by the police. Meeralakhsmi wife of Gunaseelan of Virupatchipuram in Vellore town, complained to the Bagayam police that on the night of December 7, when she was alone at home, two well-dressed youth came calling and under the pretext of handing over a wedding invitation, allegedly pulled out a knife and decamped with the 13 sovereigns kept inside the bureau. Police registered a case and verified people’s movement through CCTV cameras in the neighbourhood. As the jewels worn by Meeralakshmi were not taken away, the suspicious cops took her to the police station, where, under interrogation, she reportedly confessed that the entire episode was stage-managed to get the jewels belonging to her mother-in-law. As the relationship between her and Gunaseelan was strained and as the latter had applied for a divorce, Meeralakshmi, wanting to have enough for her and her child after the divorce, resorted to this ruse, police said. She had given the ‘stolen’ jewels to her friend residing in Arcot town for safekeeping. Police are investigating
