Vaiko to campaign for DMK after 13 years
MDMK general secretary Vaiko will campaign for the DMK on Monday, more than 13 years since he last mustered support for the party. Vaiko will share dais with DMK working president M K Stalin in an election rally at Tondiarpet in poll bound R K Nagar Monday evening. More than DMK, it was MDMK functionaries who showed more interest in popularizing their leader’s participation in the DMK rally.

Titled “Inaintha kaigal” (united hands), MDMK cadre were busy circulating the rally invite among journalists and politicians equally alike since early this week. The invite bearing images of both Vaiko and Stalin attributed the ‘reunion’ to protecting the Dravidian movement from communal forces.
Close to the 2006 Assembly election, Vaiko, who had been hobnobbing with the DMK thus far, had eventually joined the AIADMK of the Jayalalithaa who had detained him under POTA for over a year and a half since July 2002.
Vaiko would be joined by CPI state secretary R Mutharasan and VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan in mustering support for DMK candidate Maruthu Ganesh in R K Nagar. Despite extending support to the principal opposition party, a shy CPM would campaign separately or rather not share the dais with the DMK, as it had announced earlier.
It was imperative for relatively smaller parties to have truck with one of the Dravidian majors (in the instant case DMK), understandably, to increase their political stakes ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, and that too after the failed political experiments like the PWA (People’s Welfare Alliance), which drew a naught in the 2016 Assembly election.
In the same breath, it was necessary for the DMK to not only consolidate the opposition for the by-election, but also project itself as a ‘likeable’ alliance leader which could attract regional parties, something it largely failed to achieve last year.
