RK Nagar bypoll: 59 in fray; pressure cooker symbol for TTV
Sidelined AIADMK leader turned independent candidate TTV Dinakaran was allotted ‘pressure cooker,’ symbol in the December 21 RK Nagar bypoll, in which 58 other candidates including the DMK candidate N Marudhu Ganesh and AIADMK candidate E Madhusudhanan, are in the fray.

Since the symbol allocation which went in the order of registered and recognised political parties, registered parties and independents, first and third options ‘Hat’ and ‘Whistle’ marked by Dinakaran went to the registered political parties.
‘Hat’ was allotted to Namathu Kongu Munnetra Kalagam candidate M Ramesh and ‘Whistle’ to G Kesavalu of Ezhuchi Tamilargal Munnetra Kazhagam, based on their requests. A lot was drawn for ‘Bat’ since many independents like Dinakaran had opted for it.
‘Bat’ was allocated to P Premkumar.
Dinakaran said that he would emerge victorious with ‘Pressure Cooker.’ On choosing the symbol, Dinakaran said that it would symbolically toy with the psyche of ‘betrayers’ and ‘traitors’.
His supporters also registered stiff opposition with the Returning Officer for allocating ‘Two Leaves’ symbol as Form B was jointly signed by coordinator O Panneerselvam and joint-coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami, against the bylaws of the party. Overruling their objections, the symbol was allotted to Madhusudhanan. Reacting to this, Dinakaran said Madhusudhanan had offered to submit his reply.
Yes, ‘Two Leaves’ had been allocated to him. “We raised the issue relating to symbol with the Returning Officer as directed by the High Court. EC’s allocation of ‘Two Leaves’ to them is not final and is open for legal scrutiny and we will pursue it,” Dinakaran said.
The political storm whipped up by actor Vishal pushed the much-hyped symbol allocation to Dinakaran to back-burner.
A total of 59 candidates are in the final list of contenders to the bypoll and the list was put out by the RO in the evening. There is only one female candidate in the fray while the seat was thrice represented by former CM J Jayalalithaa.
Is EC independent, asks Vaiko
Commenting on the rejection of actor Vishal’s nomination in RK Nagar, MDMK leader Vaiko questioned whether the Election Commission is functioning independently. Initially, the actor’s nomination was rejected. Then the EC announced that it has been accepted and again it gave a twist to its own decision and said that the nomination had been rejected. Such acts lower the respect of the EC leading to strong doubts of interference from the ruling party, he said speaking at a marriage function in Kovilpatti on Thursday.
