In a first, Tamil Nadu cops use drone to nab thieves hiding in water plants

Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday caught thieves hiding amid water plants in a lake after locating them using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near Vallam in Thanjavur district. This is the first time that police are using UAV to locate thieves, though they usually use it to manage huge gatherings, for rescue operations in flood and traffic situations.

“Only after the police and fire service squads found that they couldn’t venture into the middle of the lake, we decided to use a drone,” said Vallam DSP Jayachandran, who supervised the operation, to DTNext. It took nearly 10 hours for the police to track the thieves. There were two of them hiding among the water plants while the third managed to escape. “We outsourced the equipment and flew it over the big stretch of plants and found two of them hiding,” said V Varadaraju, inspector general of police, central zone.

It all started on Monday night when residents saw the suspects escaping via Gnanaprakaham Nagar after breaking into one of houses in Thanjavur taluk police station limit.

The local residents and police managed to chase the suspects who had disappeared after they reached Samudrakarai lake.
